WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Eugene Vindman (Va.-07) today voted NO on HR 3486, legislation that would impose sweeping new mandatory minimum sentences and excessive prison terms on noncitizens who attempt to reenter the United States at the expense of American taxpayers.
“I will always look for ways to support smart, effective border security. But with border crossings at an all time low, this bill does nothing to improve our immigration system or protect American families,” said Vindman. “he worst crimes listed in this bill already carry a life sentence. Extreme Republicans continue to focus on the wrong priorities here, when will my colleagues start working across the aisle to lower costs?”
Under current law, improper or fraudulent entry is already a crime carrying penalties of up to two years for repeat offenses.
Analysis shows that this legislation would shift billions in costs onto American taxpayers by keeping otherwise deportable individuals in federal prisons for years rather than removing them from the country.
BACKGROUND
Vindman remains committed to addressing the real challenges at the border: investing in modern enforcement technology, strengthening ports of entry, improving the legal immigration system, and ensuring fair enforcement of immigration laws.
