WASHINGTON – Congressman Eugene Vindman (Va.-07) today backed bipartisan legislation to save lives from deadly fentanyl overdoses, combat drug trafficking, and keep communities across Virginia safe.
“In communities across Virginia, fentanyl is taking lives and tearing families apart — and it’s clear we need a comprehensive, bipartisan response,” said Vindman. “This legislation is an important step to equip law enforcement with the tools they need to disrupt cartels trafficking fentanyl and hold those dealers hurting our communities accountable.”
Vindman continued, “As a former prosecutor, I know we need to attack this crisis from every angle — disrupting supply chains, holding traffickers accountable, and expanding prevention and recovery services. We owe it to the families who have lost loved ones to take action, and I’ll keep pushing for solutions, like this bill, that will save lives.”
The bipartisan Halt Lethal Trafficking (HALT) Fentanyl Act would permanently classify fentanyl-related substances (FRS) as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act, giving law enforcement the tools they need to crack down on traffickers while ensuring scientists can continue researching these dangerous substances.
The legislation is endorsed by the Drug Enforcement Association of Federal Narcotics Agents, the Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, the Major County Sheriffs of America, the National Alliance of State Drug Enforcement Agencies, the National High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Directors Association, the National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition and the National District Attorneys Association.
